Mr Marc Bullock BM BCh MA (oxon) PhD FRCS
Mr Marc Bullock is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon recognised for his expertise in robotic and minimally invasive surgery. As the Clinical Lead for Robotic Surgery at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath, he has been instrumental in establishing and expanding one of the region’s most advanced robotic colorectal programmes. His practice focuses on delivering precision‑based, minimally invasive care for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex pelvic pathology, with a particular emphasis on leveraging robotic technology to improve patient outcomes, reduce recovery times, and enhance surgical accuracy.
Mr Bullock trained in medicine at the University of Oxford, where he received multiple academic awards, followed by surgical training at University Hospital Southampton. Alongside his clinical development, he completed a PhD in molecular oncology, investigating microRNA‑driven mechanisms in colorectal cancer, supported by competitive fellowships from the NIHR, MRC, and Cancer Research UK.
His subspecialist robotic expertise was shaped through a prestigious Clinical Fellowship in Robotic and Exenteration Surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital, where he gained accreditation in robotic colorectal surgery and trained with world‑leading surgeons across colorectal, urological, and gynae‑oncological oncology. He further broadened his academic and technical experience as the Fulbright/Royal College of Surgeons Fellow at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
At the RUH, Mr Bullock leads the development of robotic pathways, surgeon training programmes, and service innovation. He has played a key role in modernising colorectal cancer diagnostics and championing the integration of robotic techniques into routine practice. His work includes designing structured training curricula to support surgeons transitioning to robotic platforms, ensuring safe adoption and long‑term sustainability of robotic services.
Mr Bullock is also committed to global surgery and medical education. He has worked with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the Democratic Republic of Congo and collaborated with Mercy Ships and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland to deliver essential surgical skills training internationally.
Miss Sarah Richards MBChB MD FRCS(Eng)
Sarah Richards graduated in Medicine from the University of Bristol in 1997 (MBChB) and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2010. She has also completed a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) alongside Specialist Higher Surgical Training across leading units in the South West and Cambridge.
Miss Richards specialises in robotic-assisted and laparoscopic (keyhole) abdominal surgery, as well as open surgical techniques. Her clinical practice focuses on hernia surgery—offering the full range of surgical approaches—and the treatment of gallstone and gallbladder disease.
She was appointed in Bath in 2013 as the first female Consultant General Surgeon. Since then, she has developed a national reputation for advancing day-case keyhole surgery pathways, with her work adopted by hospitals across the UK and internationally.
Alongside her clinical practice, Sarah has an extensive background in medical leadership. She has served as Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the Royal United Hospital and is currently Medical Director at Sulis Hospital. She is also a National Clinical Lead at NHS England and Specialty Advisor in Emergency General Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons.
Her contributions to surgery and education have been widely recognised. She has received multiple awards, including Surgical Trainer of the Year for the South West, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals.
