What is the da Vinci® robotic platform?
The da Vinci® system is an advanced surgical technology that helps surgeons perform operations with greater precision and control.
Despite the name, a robot does NOT perform the surgery. Your surgeon is in full control at all times. The system simply translates the surgeon’s hand movements into very precise movements inside the body.
The system has three main parts:
- A surgeon’s console where your surgeon sits and operates
- Robotic arms that hold small surgical instruments
- A high-definition 3D camera that gives a clear, magnified view inside the body
Using this system, surgery is usually performed through a few small “keyhole” incisions rather than one large cut.

- Small cuts (incisions) are made in the skin
- Tiny instruments and a camera are placed inside
- The surgeon controls the instruments from a nearby console
- The system converts the surgeon’s movements into smaller, steadier, more precise actions
